Masala Burger Taste-off
One of my favourite Trader Joe’s products is their Masala Burger. There aren’t too many soy-free, vegan burgers, and none that taste as good as the Masala Burger. Last time I was in the United States I bought two boxes, even though I didn’t have a way to keep them frozen. They are just too good to resist.

Imagine my excitement when I saw Sol Cuisine has a Masala Burger of their own. Is it an inferior Trader Joe’s knock off? I pitted them head-to-head in a taste-off to find out.

Challenger: Reigning Champion:
Sol Cuisine’s Indian Masala Burger Trader Joe’s Vegetable Masala Burger
– even mashed potato texture – chunky bits with peas and corn
– mild Indian flavours – immediate spicy Masala taste
– soy-free, gluten-free, non-GMO, & vegan – soy-free and vegan
– less sodium and saturated fat – more calories and vitamins
– available in Canada – worth the trip to the USA

The winner: It was close. The Trader Joe’s burger has a better taste and texture. Once you add condiments and toppings it all tastes the same, but on its own the Trader Joe’s burger has a clear flavour advantage. On the other hand, the Sol Cuisine burger is healthier (with non-GMO ingredients and less salt and fat) and it’s available in Canada. Now that I have an alternative close by, I won’t be so desperate to stock up when I visit the States.
