So, the first 2 weeks of classes have come and gone, and I can’t say I’ve done much school work. Maybe your last semester is supposed to be a real party term, but I can’t help but feel uneasy with all the partying I’ve done without starting a single assignment. I have managed to hit the gym 5 times in the past 10 days, but that seems like my only accomplishment.

Tuesday night we watched Brokeback Mountain – the gay cowboy flick with lots of Oscar buzz. The story moved pretty slowly, with lots of scenes of characters staring at each other without any dialogue. There weren’t any stunning visual effects or amazing action sequences. I think the movie’s strong point was forcing you to think about your own stereotypes and preconceptions; that and the oh-so-cliche lassoing scene. It was a good movie, but I’m not sure if it warrants all the hype. I guess its subject matter is a bit controversial. And it has lead to plenty of discussions here and a lot of joking about meeting people on the mountain and references to cowboys.

This week I passed on Bomber Wednesday (even though last week was a blast), and instead Lorrissa, Erin, Ben, and I (herein referred to as the Roomies) spent the evening drinking wine and playing cribbage and poker. In many ways it was better than Bomber because no one got overly drunk, stumbling home was much faster, and I love playing cards.

Thursday night the Roomies went to Molly Bloom’s and met up with Laura and her Environmental Science friends. It was a good evening, but we sat next to the band, so I ended up shouting all night.

Friday night I ended up at Nic’s for a boys night out poker tournament. $5 buy in, Texas Holdem style. We all had big dreams of winning big like Steve Paul-Ambrose, the Waterloo student who just won $1.3 million USD in a poker tournament. We played for 5 hours and managed to squeeze to tournaments in. Sean won the first one, and by some small miracle, I managed to take the second one. So I walked away $25 richer at the end of the night.
